Trish, It's actually probably the new default spacing they use that is separate from the line spacing you were trying to change with Alt 1. To make it look like the classic line spacing you are accustomed to, do the following:
On the home ribbon, there is a button in the Quick Styles section. Get to it with Alt H G. The first option when you down arrow is Style Set; right arrow to open the submenu. Arrow down through the list of options until you find Word 2003, then hit enter. (My list begins with "Distinctive".) In order to make this your default spacing in Word, press Alt H G again and arrow up once to select "Set as Default". Hit enter. (If you prefer to tab to these options, they are to the far right on the Home ribbon in the Quick Styles group.)
