thing is Becky! mail was working fine with window-eyes 9.2,
read-to-end, but not in window-eyes 9.3.
I've changed those options mentioned in the quoted messages long ago,
and bought the client, only to find that now I cannot read messages
in it with read-to-end at all.

Becky works very well but you need to change two settings. In the
Tools, General setup dialog on the Message View tab, uncheck the
"Control four-way button with arrow keys" check box and the cursor
will work when you are reading messages. In the Editor tab in the
same dialog, uncheck the Display line pointer option which, if
checked, can cover up the first character.
