Is there any chance this is happening in a dropbox folder? If so, turn off "badges" in the dropbox preferences.

When that happens I cannot read the text with the arrow keys. I know it is still there, because I can use the mouse pointer to read what's on the screen. My work-around is to press the alt key to call up the ribbon.
