Here's how to send a program shortcut to the desktop from the Windows 10 start menu. Note: This option is not available for Windows universal apps or whatever they're calling them this week.

Go to the item in the start menu.
Open the context menu, More, Open file location.
This opens the folder with the start menu shortcut focused.
Now you can open the context menu, Send to, Desktop (create shortcut).

Tom

Thank you for this! Until recently in Windows 10, when I wanted to add an
internet shortcut to the desktop, I could do what I always did in 7:
Go to Favorites, find the link to the page I wanted to put on the desktop,
press the context menu and arrow down to Send To.
Then Desktop, Create Shortcut.
But this stopped working for me. I would get a message that Windows could
not create the shortcut. Check to see if the disk is full.
Seriously! Windows?
I checked with a tech geek on this list and he too got this same error,
though a friend can still use the old way.
I never thought to look under the file menu when I was actually on the page!
How easy! Smile. Ways and ways. Thank you, Microsoft!
In Windows 10 though, there is no longer a send to option when you press the
context menu key on an app name in the Apps menu.
You can only pin it to the start menu or to the task bar.
Actually, I prefer the Taskbar when I don't use the search edit box. The
Taskbar with the Windows key gives you numbers 1 through9 to quickly get to
any program on the Taskbar. You just have to remember that Word is number
3, for example, but it's quicker than going to the Desktop and arrowing
through the Microsoft listings
Google says that in Windows 10, Microsoft has made it really easy to put an
icon on the Desktop. No, Send to Desktop is no longer available, but hey,
just drag it there! How quick and easy! I would have liked to ask the
writer of the tip if he'd ever tried dragging an icon with his eyes closed!
LOL!

And how to place a shortcut such as Internet Exploer on the desktop. This
doesn't seem to work the way it did with windows 7?

mark,I think allot of us need more than listening to a tutorial on the
start menu and desktop. Personally I'd like to know how I can set my system
up so I have window eyes working flawlessly. 90 percent of the time I get a
ding when trying to review the screen with the mouse pointer. I've been
using wineyes for nearly 20 years going back to windows3.1 through Vista and
this windows ten has me baffled. Also, ribbons suck! Auto play and sounds
setup is totally different than previous versions of windows.

This topic was raised on the list a while back. I searched the archives and
found this suggestion from Tom Kingston: "Here's a link to Cathy Anne
Murtha's YouTube page. She has videos on the start menu and the desktop.
https://www.youtube.com/user/CathyAnneMurtha";

And, here is a link to the Blind Training website where you can learn about
the Immersion into Windows 10 with Window-Eyes textbook she created:
http://www.blind.training/ati-textbooks/windows-textbooks-2/an-immersion-int
o-windows-10-with-window-eyes/.
It's not free, but sometimes, you get what you pay for.

Marc
