Linette,
The F8 selection method is only valid in browse mode. So if you're not
in browse mode use the standard shifted keys method to select text. When
you hear "not a valid key press" you're in browse mode but it's not
working. The only way I can get into this state is by manually turning
on browse mode in a composition window. And there's no way out of it
that I'm aware of. I have to close Thunderbird and open it again to get
things back to normal. This is a bug because you shouldn't be able to
turn on browse mode in what is essentially an edit window. This is why
if you try to turn on browse mode in Notepad you hear "browse mode not
available." Conversely, you cannot do anything if you open a message
you've received, which will turn on browse mode, and you turn it off.
So you have to know whether you're in browse mode or not because the
selection method differs depending on that state. When you open a
message to read you should be in browse mode and F8 should work. When
you create a new message to write or reply to one you should not be in
browse mode and the standard shifted keys selection method should work.
But no matter where you are you should not turn browse mode on or off
manually because both will land you in an unfunctional state and the
only way out is to close Thunderbird and reopen it.

Mr. Kingston, you gave me the following instructions: I was to go to the

Well, nothing happens. If browse mode is off, at least in Thunderbird,
there is no speech; if I press space after pressing the second F8, WE
says "Not a valid key press."
I'm guessing that there is some setting that needs to be changed. I hope
that my explanation is clear.
Windows 8, latest Thunderbird, We 9.4.
Peace.
