Bob, I haven't looked at WLM in a few years, so I'm going from memory. From the inbox, press Alt-F, T to open the WLM options. Next, go to the Mail tab, and look for an option that says something to the effect of, "show an envelope icon when new mail arrives." Uncheck it, hit Enter to accept the change, and you should be all set.
If that doesn't work or you can't locate the option, I recommend pingging the Microsoft Disability Answer Desk for help. They can be reached at (800) 936-5900. Hope this helps.
