Slight correction if you're talking about iOS. When you can simply lift
your finger to enter a character that's touch typing. For me it's much
faster than having to double tap or split tap.
And for dictation I never use the button. A two finger double tap starts
and stops dictation.

I have my typing mode set to standard keyboard. When I touch a letter,
if I want that letter I lift, if not I slide to the letter I want. I
use the backspace a lot and also dictation helps. There is a dictation
button on the lower left near the spacebar.
If I do any writing of any length, I use my desktop with Window-eyes.
(there, I related the topic to W-e)

OK folks, I've been wanting to ask this for a long time. Not having
ever attempted to use a tablet, iPhone or any other touch screen
device, I realize just how stupid this question might sound, but bear
with me, OK?
I just want to know how a blind user like myself avoids becoming a
hunt and pecker when trying to type on a touch screen. There
obviously can't be anything like home keys, or a easily
recognizable home base for the fingers, so short of having to buy
and use a bluetooth keyboard, how do you guys who make use of these
screens do it?
Please be nice <smile>.
