In fact that was very helpful because it confirms to me that I am not doing
something wrong. 

It is a strange glitch.

I am going to see if the MS Accessibility folk have any advice.

I do use an Outlook account for two of my other email accounts and I might
end up using it for my one that I hoped to use Mail for too.

Hi Ramona,
I ran into the same problem you did.  The first message read without a hitch
but that was it.  I couldn't get WE to read the next or subsequent messages.
The rest of the program is, as you say, pretty accessible but it's no good
if you can't read messages.  I gave it up as a bad job in the end and went
to Outlook 2016.
