Hi Kevin!

When I first got a computer in 1991, I bought it, because it was on sale, I hadn't had time to decide on any access technology before buying the computer. It was a 386 made by Magnavox.

I wanted to do my homework, not just grab the first thing anyone mentioned. Well, there was a demonstration for the Kurzweil OCR software and JAWS, so I went to that demo. The guy who was giving the demo told me that I should get JAWS, because it was the best. He was hyping it to the hilt. No matter what it is, if someone hypes the thing so much, I always think, "It can't be as good as they say." Well, I wanted to make up my own mind, not let anyone push me into anything. I visited as many people as I could find in my area to see what screen reader they had. I am glad I did that. One guy had Artic, someone had JAWS and someone had Vocal-Eyes. Dominic from Humanwhere came to my home and showed me KeySoft. I also tried ASAP. When I went to the lady's house and saw Vocal-Eyes, that was it. That was the screen reader for me. I had gotten some catalogues and brochures, one being from GW Micro. I called, and Doug answered. I told him that I had a brochure, but knew nothing about computers yet, and asked him if he would explain several terms that I didn't have a clue about, and he was so gracious and patient. He explained things so well for someone just starting out. Well, I know I made the right choice, because I really enjoyed Vocal-Eyes, and then I bought a 486 and moved into Windows 3.1 with Window-Eyes 1.0 and upgraded every time there was something new. As time went on, so much software worked right out of the box, so I don't think I have made a set file in years. I feel bad that development has stopped, but, well, that's life, things change. I accepted the migration. I am thankful for it, but JAWS, for me is not a replacement for Window-Eyes, but a substitute.

I am in the process of gathering parts for a new build in a midsize tower,. Then I will move up from Windows 7 Pro 32 bit to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. Window-Eyes, (my first screen-reader love) will be installed first, then JAWS, then NVDA. I would like to learn both in that order. Thank you all for being so generous with your JAWS knowledge. I have learned a lot just by reading posts. I downloaded Raul's migration tutorials, but haven't listened to them yet, because I want a teachable moment to start them, and that will be JAWS 18 in Windows 10.

Hi Sky:

As somebody who works for a vendor in Canada, I can tell you with
absolute certainty that we never told that to anyone. I will admit
that some of my coworkers were under that impression at first, but I
let them know, and showed them if necessary, that that was not the
case.

It may very well be that your experience with the vendors that you
have dealt with tells a different story, I wouldn't be at all
surprised, but I know that not all vendors did that. In fact, when I
wanted to upgrade to Windows 9 and get an SMA, my coworker suggested
that it would be cheaper to upgrade Microsoft Office to the latest
version and then download the free version of Window-eyes.
