I don't think requiring users to create a login to get coordinates displayed is a good idea. I would prefer having this as an option in the layers pulldown or some such. If it needs to be persistant it can be stored in a cookie. Anyway, I also don't think having a permanent coordinate display below the permalink is too intrusive.
