Yes but let's view this the other way round. Say someone is making a cool OSM based application for their little town/village and they want to store some image links in OSM - would that be bad? Let them make whatever decisions they must make about deep linking and whatnot.

This is often forgotten but we used to recommend to users that if they want to map something which is likely of no interest to others, they could do so by putting their username in front of the key, like

johndoe:image_link=...

What I'm saying is, yes I don't think that we should start a "project of the month" encouraging everyone to put in image links everywhere; our core project is making a map and ideally the image databases of this would would have an API where you can quickly request images for a certain location. But if someone *wants* to do it, then we certainly shouldn't tell him to stop.
