FIRST PART

THE EARLY TIMES - 1800-1900

This Tango Time brings the early sounds of the African candombe, the milonga
campera with its roots in the milonga Andalusa and the Cuban dances known as
Habaneras (1800) and concludes with the tango canyengue of the turn of the
century (1900).

Dance: Tango canyengue.

THE OLD GUARD, THE TYPICAL TANGO - 1900-1950

During this tango time millions emigrated from Europe to Argentina looking for
freedom and a better way of life. Their musicians brought feelings that
contributed new musical styles to the Argentine Tango. The Argentine Tango
leaves its Rio Plata cradle and travels the world around.

Dances: Tango viejo, milonga, typical tangos and the happy vals.

SECOND PART

AVANT GARDE - 1950 - TO THE PRESENT

Born in the previous evolutionary tango time, Astor Piazzolla, Horacio Salgan

musician's point of view. Taught by New York Tango Trio's Pablo Aslan.

Saturday, September 7
11am-1pm
Triangle Dance Studio

Tickets: $25, $20 Students.
Call Gulden Ozen at 402-9562.

PART ONE - Introduction to tango rhythms

The Tango Musicality Workshop helps dancers develop an awareness of the musical
elements of tango. Unlike other dance music, tango does not rely on drums to
communicate its beat. Rather, the beat is inside the orchestra, shared by all
the instruments. After this workshop you will never hear tango music the same
way. We'll take you inside a tango orchestra and share the secrets of tango
musicians and arrangers. Through rhythmic exercises, counting, clapping, and
stepping on and off the beat, you'll discover the elusive nature of tango
rhythm.

TOPICS

Introduction to the major rhythmic figures utilized in the Argentine tango:
Marcato Sincopa - 3-3-2 - Milonga - Tango syncopations - Off the beat figures
- Subdivisions derived from the milonga rhythm.

PART TWO - Introduction to phrasing

Tangos are like poems: in 3 minutes they tell a whole story dealing with deep
emotions but like any work of art, a structure lies beneath the _expression.
This workshop looks at the structure of tangos, from the basic 4 measure unit,
to longer phrases and sections. This key concept is the link between music and
most dance steps. You will gain insight into the style of the major tango
orchestras.

TOPICS

4, 8 and 16 bar phrases - Form and structure: sections, arrangements - Style
variations

Comparison of the same song as arranged by various orchestras. - Dancing
exercises incorporating longer structures.
