I suspect the problem was that the text copied into Google was in a different character code-set to that expected by Google - i.e. the page ended up with mixed and confusing code-sets (probably a combination of single and multiple-bytes codes). Google is usually one of the best translators around, and translators in general have improved significantly over the last few years.
PS: If you want to see something really impressive, watch a demo of Google Wave performing real-time translations! i.e. you can key text into a document, and another user of your "wave" can see the translation character-by character as you type. As you complete a phrase the translation changes as it better understands the context and grammar.
