I got the Gil back today after a week's worth of it being absent from
Fremont Ave. After I finally got the Woodbutcher out of the park(many
thanks to Paul Duff) and told him what was going on, his first comment
was "Congratulations, I see you've got one of my famous self-
destructing mandolins. Don't send it back to me!" He did say to take
it to Hugh at Gruhn's and that he could take care of it. I reckon they
must have put the mandolin in a bag with something moist and hung it
up for a couple days to swell the crack shut. So today, Hugh told me
that it took three tries before the glue would hold and that they were
starting to consider using cleats on the seam. Egad. It does sound a
little sleepy, but I think it will come around in a bit. Still plenty
there. I will say though, I'm getting used to the way this F4 sounds
and liking it a lot too. I think I'm gonna keep it near the 'dola
where I can get at
it easier. A closed case is a powerful deterrent.

I got to play a Gil H5 while I was there. It's a big rascal at 17.5"
scale length. That didn't seem to matter so much though. Somewhere
along the way someone had tried to radius the fingerboard without
taking out the frets. There is also a very nice D'Angelico two-point
oval hole mandolin there, complete with lamp finial on the headstock
tip. I don't think I've ever seen a D'Angelico mandolin, but this one
is very good sounding and would be well worth owning. It does not
sound like a Gibson or anything else I've heard. The sound is hard for
me to describe, but I will say that it is silky and smooth sounding
with plenty of mids and meaty treble. If I had the extra cash I think
I'd own that thing for a while because it has definitely got a
different voice than anything else I've heard.
