Steve,
You never mentioned you were interested in the oval hole mandos. I
loooooove my F4 Gil. Of course, Robert Dragone says that it's an
"abomination", but lovingly. You know, I've found that the F4 really
seems to fill up the airspace with tone more than my F5. Plus, I
experienced first hand(at the Symposium) how much better the oval
holes blend with other mandolins in a group, IMHO of course. The main
thing I have to think about when playing oval hole mandos is that they
don't seem to be as quick off the mark as the f-hole mandos. Seems
like the notes have to have time to "ripen".

As for old Gibsons, the one instrument I miss the most is the late
20's Gibson A Jr I owned. Of course I hot-rodded it a little with a
set of ebony button Waverly tuners and a Randy Wood bridge and an old
F2 tailpiece, but that mandolin was really, really good. I get to see
it every now and then. But then, Cousin Don Grieser's got a Model 1
Gil that would give it a run. The A Jr was a fluke, though I ain't
heard too many snakeheads that aren't pretty good.

When am I gonna get to hear it?
