I know a workshop would work here in the area....may be better to go to
Lubbock or Odessa/Midland because of airport access. When Sam Bush came to
Amarillo, he sold out the large theater down town. I sat on the second row in
the middle. I have been talking to Stephen Mougin since he played with Melonie
Canoon and it was good to see him playing with Sam. I stayed late and visited
with everyone and it was a blast. People came from all over West Texas and
Central Texas.

They also have a large indoor jam in January every year in Amarillo. It also is
well attended and has people coming from all over the country.

There is the camp bluegrass at Levelland.

There are some very good bands from this part of the world. Triple L from New
Mexico travels all over the country. There is another good band from Lubbock
and one from San Angelo that have alot of regional gigs.

Snyder has the big western swing festival. Some of our friends, Rickey Boen and
Texas Mud are a western swing band and have moved to Branson and have a show
there...they have done so for the last couple of years. Of course the king of
western swing is honored with a large festival every year in Turkey...of course
I am talking about Bob Wills.

My point is that there are people in this part of the world who would love to
have a workshop. The problem is that we are spread out in this part of the
world so people have to drive a long way to attend. It would have to be well
advertized. There20would need to be rv hook ups and hotel and restaurant
arrangements made...there are some great catering companies in the area.

It would work. It really would.

Rich, there is a big festival here every year called the "White Buffalo"
festival. It is like a mini Sturgess event. There are motorcycle clubs from all
over the country in the area. They have bands play. I guarantee they would eat
your music up.

Ok, enough for now. But this is something I have been thinking about for some
time. I really would love to set up something in this part of the world. Maybe
even a once a quarter event where maybe two instructors/performers come and
share a Saturday to teach and then perform a great show that night.

As I have said in other posts, I love the mandolin and I would love to share
the music with the world. I still play my guitar once in a while. I still play
my bass once or twice a year. I still play my banjo occassionally. I hardly
ever play my drums. But I play the mandolin every day. It has become a passion
that I think about multiple times per day.

Ok, seriously, enough for now.

Thanks for the good word Denny.

Re: a workshop…..they start out small.  I make pretty good m
oney
around the country doing Sat. afternoon workshops. I’m doing one next Sat in
Austin, another in NYC in April. If you have an organization, or music store
that can host it and a mailing list of mando players I could come out to get a
series started. Maybe talk Mike into joining us. Pretty soon it grows and we
talk Grisman, Marshall and others to come.

As George “Harmonica” Smith used to say, “When you stop and
think about it, that’s something to stop and think about.”

the lyrics to
those blues songs on that particular album are so funny that I am positive and
excited and the tempo is great for two steps a beat on most songs (sometimes 4
steps a beat). I have tried to get my teenage son interested in music...he is a
quarterback on the football team and doesn't have much desire for anything but
ACDC, which is fine, I listen occasionally myself. The only thing that he has
been interested in when it comes to guitar or mandolin has been Rich's album
and the homespun blues mandolin dvd's. AGain, it is the lyrics that are fun and
with the blues style it is more enjoyable for him. I used to play drums in a
band and he liked it when I sang bl
ues songs.

have no fear, I listen to stomp alot too. I still say that Evening Prayer Blues
is the greatest recording ever.

I just changed my mp3 player tunes yesterday and have been listening to some
old Doyle Lawson and old Bill Monroe. I love their style and feel. I just wish
they had been recorded with our modern technology. Can you imagine how awesome
some of those old tunes would sound with all the advancements? They are great
even with their basic tools. Now  you can make better quality recordings
at home on your computer.

If we could ever get something going in Lubbock, Abilene, San Angelo, Amarillo,
or even at South Plains in Levelland with Joe Carr, I would do whatever I could
to make it work. I would go to every festival I could in the area to pass out
flyers. I would contact all the music organizations and all the college music
departments. I would contact as many school music teachers and more. There are
some good facilities for something right here in Snyder. We have a large gym
and stands which they call the collosium because of the college basketball
teams. The area has many other support buildings and halls for displays and
more which are used for livestock shows, rodeos, a huge western swing festival
every summer (I mean huge), and much more.

I even thought about trying to get the board of the western swing festival to
bring in some great mandolin musicians to provide more depth to the event.

There is also a good theater20here that would be great for an event. I was
thinking about having a wide variety of mandolinist come over the course of a
weekend. It would provide the audience with a wide varieity of styles to hear.
It would be great to hear Grisman, Mike Marshall, Mike Compton, DelGrosso, Evan
Marshall, Tim Obrien, and more. Classical, blues, rock, bluegrass, celtic, and
more in one weekend mini festival. To me, that sounds like one great weekend.

Now, if someone would give me a fat check from the government bailouts to pay
for it, we will be all set.

Denny,

Would love to. Maybe we need to talk about the idea and see what we

can come up with. Seems it would need to include multiple styles.

Cardio? Does Rich have out a "Blues-ercise" aerobics video? "Sweatin'

to Yank". Now we're talking. Work it hard, ladies.
