Hey Big Tater, are you still passing around the lines you wrote down from Andy Statman's Fiddlers Blues? If so, I would to get in on that action.

Here's a link to a tune that I've been passing around lately. I first heard Ralph Blizzard tear through this about 15 years ago and I thought then that if Monroe had heard this he'd have played it. The tune comes from Fiddlin' Arthur Smith, not to be confused with Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith, the writer of "Dueling Banjos". Our good samaritan Val Mindel sent me a copy of Mr. Smith's track and I was tickled pink to get it. Finally, I can learn this little gem. So, I wrote out a few lines of it and sent it around. Ironically, there is a Monroe tune by the same name, but an entirely different tune in a different key with a different feel and having no resemblance to Smith's tune. I sent out a track of Jimmy Campbell playing a twin fiddle version of Monroe's tune accompanied by tab for Smith's tune. Duh... The ingenius and confused recipient who shall remain unnamed (...writes vampire books...) sent me an email saying that he couldn't make 'hide nor hair' out of it until he found this video by the illustrious Andy Statman. Now all is better, he says. Here's the link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Mv8lsG-fA I must say, my brain is spattered all over the room. Where in the world would Andy pick this tune up? In the depths of my ignorance I do not understand. To me, this tune is not even well-known in current oldtime circles, save possibly by the more "mature" participants. Even then, it would seem to me that a person would have to be interested in Arthur Smith and digging into his tunes to even find this one. Am I just so far out of touch that I don't get it? I am going to have to call Andy and find out for myself.
