I also enjoy the Skaggs and Rice album. It's the only Skaggs I have on my iPod. I've seen Skaggs twice. The first time at RockyGrass, he came out and played at a volume so extreme I stuffed paper towels in my ears and left the area. All the other bands that weekend were at a pleasant level to listen to, so there was something up with that. The other time (why, oh why did I venture to hear him again?), he came out and played 3 songs at blistering tempos without any talking between songs. When they finally stopped, someone from the audience yelled, "Play a fast one." Skaggs seemed baffled by that.
I certainly won't go out of my way to see him at a festival, and if he's playing at a festival I'm attending, I'll probably leave the area because I do value what's left of my hearing and his music doesn't really feed my soul the way the music should. Anyone who feels the need to proclaim that they're the saviour of bluegrass music needs their hat size reduced. Funny how Del McCoury and all the people who stayed in bluegrass all those years because that's where their hearts were don't make those kinds of claims. Skaggs' country career went down the toilet and Skaggs saw a way to reinvent his music career and make money in bluegrass so he started playing bluegrass again. That's my perception of Skicky Raggs whatever it's worth.
