This is, in fact, the entire point of teaching if the teacher is worth his or her NaCl: The teacher aims--or should--for the student be better than him. There are many ways this can be done, of course, some not very savory. Witness the multitudes of stories about learning classical music from some of the rather-more-than cantankerous masters.
Part of the issue too, it seems to me, is that of the cult of celebrity. I realize I may be overstating the case, but essentially one of it's founding tenets is that we expect our heroes to be heroic. Because we love the art, we expect to love the artist. It has disappointed me no end to have read a book or heard a piece of music only to find out what an utter burk/toad/bore/right-or-left-wing-nut-job the author is. It took me a long time to realize this is my problem. Now the OP was about a negative comment from D. Grier at a guitar workshop. I don't agree with your opinion but, as they say, I'll fight like hell for your right to have it and stand by it. You experienced something you internalized negatively and had a reaction. No problem there. The problem I have is the leap from disliking his interpersonal skills to turning off his music. Art is not the same as boycotting Nestle products because you feel the company contributes to starvation in Africa. I feel strongly that the creator's ability or inability to be the person you'd like him or her to be is irrelevant and urge you to reconsider. Now if you just don't enjoy the music, that's a totally different beast.
