I just finished Daniel Levitin's "This Is Your Brain On Music." A lot of the
folks who study this kind of thing have come up with 10,000 hours--that's
how long it takes to get to mastery. I think Malcolm Gladwell, a writer from
the New Yorker who's written some great books came up with that figure, I
think. I don't think it's 10,000 hours of noodling--that's 10,000 hours of
working at it. There's no doubt there's some who are born with a musical
gift, but the scientists have shown that playing music causes all kinds of
new connections to develop in one's brain. The younger you start, the more
connections. But even older folks' brains make new connections, and the more
you play and learn new tunes, the more connections your brain develops, the
better you get.
