I have a 20's Gibson H-2 with the warmest, sweetest imaginable sound. It's pretty loud, too! Its scale must be about 15" or so, not sure. I measured it once a long time ago, but my memory ain't what it used to be. And neither is my memory.
Strings make a big difference on this mandola. I tried some lighter strings (longer scale strings, I guess) and they sounded OK, but a were little bit floppy feeling. I ended up using Elixir medium mandolin strings and adding an Elixir guitar string .052 and taking the ball off. This works well, sounds great on this mellow instrument, and they last for many many months. I guess I play it in whatever key the singer wants. I choose the instrument mainly for the timbre, not so much the key. Heck, I usually don't even know what key I'm in, once the tune gets going.
