Well I jumped off the deep end and got a Kimble 'dola. It's an A- style with ff holes and a 16" scale. I really wish I could sing because this would be the perfect backup instrument. I've been transposing some fiddle tunes and working on breaks to a few simple songs. So far so good. At this point I think I like the 'dola better than I like my octave mando. It has a 23.5" scale and a fairly wide neck. It's a bear to play. On the 'dola I can use mandolin fingering for most things. And it's already been a huge learning experience transposing tunes and figuring out chords. there really isn't any tab for the dola which is a great thing. I gotta figure it all out myself, which is a very good thing!
