I don't generally make an effort to play the mandola with "mandolin
brain". I find it's an exercise in frustration. It seems that I have
the best results when I use it like a small-bodied archtop guitar,
especially with that 17" scale. Yea, great sounding little beast.
Gilchrist describes mandolas as compromise instruments.
