I've got the same two cuts, but also have Charlie Walden (master Missouri fiddler) at my house right now, so I asked him. He believes Bob Christeson took his version of Old Virginia largely from memory, which might explain differences. There are lots of differences between the Powers family (even when you get to the actual bit where they're playing the tune) and Hartford. Who knows? I like the way Tater plays it, which is the way I'm trying to play it on the mandolin. Meanwhile is it Audrey or Aubrey on the Powers cut doing the slice of mandolin rehearsal? That tune is definitely not Old Virginia unless she/he is living in some other universe. Meanwhile there's snow on Mt Snow so I guess winter is officially here in Vermont.... best, val
