The version I know comes from a piece of old sheet music that includes several 'Virginia Reels'. Seems like Hartford or James Bryan dug it up someplace. James plays a C natural on the G string instead of the notated C#, which changes the entire complexion of the song for me. My .02 cents worth from Boston...
