You don't need to do a 'dataflow edit' or the edit manager if you are using the platform - just call .doEdit() on the Edit. The reason for using the edit manager in the workbench is to support undo/redo - and for triggering the 'workflow has changed' flag so that the workbench will ask you to save the workflow before quitting.
