ISSUE:: SOLVED.

The issue revolved around m2eclipse specifically.  Using the current
version 2.0:: 0.12.1.20110112-1712 will cause the maven archetype to display
the error::

"Remote catalog is empty."

By removing version 0.12 and using the 0.10 core install of m2eclipse the
issue is resolved.
