Can you add new global variables or is it picking the environment 
variables up from the execution environment?  i.e. could I specify $fred?

You can share input values between processors in Taverna by setting a 
String Constant, but that would not pick up the environment variable.

I'll add the default value request into Jira (the bug tracking system).
