The restriction is mainly because we found the problem very late in

something very silly like directory separator characters. I don't know
if things will work nicely (after the obvious issues are addressed) when
running something like Tomcat as a Windows Service. That's because
services run with quite different environments to users.

So should I take this as advice that in general there will be no
guarantees that Taverna Server will work reliably on Windows (I
assume the client will always work)? Unless there is somebody with a
real windows need who can step up and maintain things I guess.

Well, it's really a matter of fixing the bug so that it works at all.
I've got a good idea what's causing it (a bunch of bad assumptions on my
part). There's also the Windows Service stuff, which I know I'm more
ignorant about, but which is also a bit less critical; it does not need
to be fixed in order to run workflows on Windows, but only to make
things feel like other services. (It might also end up as being not a
problem at all.)

Just to be clear, if that is the case, thats fine, I have been a
happy *nix user for a long time and I can relate :). However, since
our project does involve windows only tools I will have to take a
closer look at workarounds or alternative engines.

Basically, I couldn't work on fixing it this week because I had a
multi-day meeting (out in the wilds of Surrey) to go to instead. :-( But
next week, I'll have time to fix. You can track the issue by going to:

  http://www.mygrid.org.uk/dev/issues/browse/TAVSERV-110

I don't know yet whether to roll the fix out as a separate branch or as
part of the next general release (which has quite a few other things
too). I've just not had any time to ask everyone about strategy here. :-)

Donal.
