Dear Peter,
A key on the keyboard can be identified by two ways:
1. Scan code
Every key on the keyboard has its own scan code and this code is
independent from that you see on the key itself. It depends only on
the position of key within the keyboard. For example, the scan code of
the 'Y' on an English keyboard is the same as 'Z' on a German
keyboard.
2. Virtual Key code (VK)
Windows gives a virtual key code to every key. Virtual key code for
English letters and numbers are their ASCII code and for other keys
it's absolutely indeterminable. (only a M$ employee could tell to us)
VK code of [ is 219 on English keyboards, and this equals to the VK
code of on a German keyboard. The VK code of = is 187 on English
keyboard, and there is no such key on on the Swiss keyboard. This
means you can not use Ctrl+= on the Swiss keyboard, but on a German
keyboard Ctrl+= is the same as Ctrl++.
Unfortunately, TB! uses VK to see which key has been pressed.
The truth is Windows UI design concept (can be found on Microsoft
Developer Network CDs) says programmers should use only English
letters, numbers, and function keys to their shortcuts. Delphi does
not support assigning keyboard shortcuts to non-standard keys, from
the above reason. The only solution is using scan code instead of VK
code (Windows sends both when a key is pressed). This way, you would
have to press that key on your German keyboard that is at the same
place as the '=' button on the English keyboard.
Anyway, until Stefan makes this change, use KR. Since KR changes only
the ASCII code, the VK will be untouched. This way the keyboard will
behave like an English keyboard but at the same time you will be able
to enter German characters.
Best wishes,
Daniel
