A self-extracting archive is still an archive. You can store it, re-name it, do anything to it that you can to to any other archive, including archive it inside another archive, if you want. But it has an .exe file extension, rather than .zip, .rar, or dot-anything. And when you double click it, you can extract it to anywhere you want. That is really the ONLY difference, other than the fact that the self-extracting format has an overhead of a few bytes compared to the original file. I don't see one bit of functionality that you gain from having an archive that relies on an underlying program to open and extract its contents, as opposed to a self-extracting archive, that needs no underlying program, period.
