Here's a small comparison between POP and IMAP taken from fastmail.fm (as if you couldn't tell! :-)
POP is a very simple protocol that only allows downloading of messages from your Inbox to your local computer. Generally, once transferred, the email is then on your local computer and is removed from FastMail. IMAP is a much more advanced protocol that allows you to see all your folders on FastMail, and quickly view subjects and message bodies of emails, but delay downloading of larger emails (such as those with attachments) to a later time if you want. IMAP also allows you to synchronise mail folders between your home machine and FastMail on the web, so that you see the same folders and messages wherever and however you access your email. IMAP 1. Can view just message headers, and then choose which messages to download 2. Can delete/move a message without having to download it 3. Can download just text body of a message 4. Can view messages in all folders 5. Can access messages both at home/work, and on the road through the web interface POP 1. Have to download all messages at once 2. Have to download all messages 3. Have to download entire message (including any large attachments) 4. Can only download messages from Inbox 5. Once downloaded, can only access messages at home/work TNT Wednesday, March 20, 2002, 12:34:37 PM, you wrote: AH> Bonjour Stefan, AH> Mercredi, le 20 mars 2002 11h32 [GMT +0200] (ce qui correspond AH> 10h32 ici o j'habite), Stefan Tanurkov =[ST] a crit Alexis Haeringer : >> Proper IMAP4 implementation requires BIG changes in the core code and >> these changes ARE planned for version 2.
