Hi Gareth,

It has been stated that V2 will have an option to download images.

There is something you need to understand a bit more clearly first
though.

SMTP/POP3 are message transfer protocols. Complete messages are
received and stored off-line for reading. HTTP is a browsing HyperText
transfer protocol. It is a complete protocol and includes a GET key
capability to provide access to any objects not transmitted with the
core article.

Now, it is one thing to implement HTML rendering capabilities in an
email client. Sadly it is necessary because of the rise in MUAs that
pump out this (IMHO) pure drivel (email is text, not HTML). It is a
complete departure to implement the entire HTTP protocol in an email
client. HTTP is the domain of the web browser. SMTP/POP3 is the domain
of the email client.

Just out of interest, why haven't I *ever* seen anyone ask for
POP3/SMTP capabilities in a browser?

Back to the point. V2 is intended to include a download for
out-of-line images. Don't jump for joy just yet! When I discussed this
with the developers, they said that the facility would be either "Off"
(never GET external images) or "On". When "On", *every separate
external image* would result in a prompt of "download <xxx> image
now?". This is the only way it should be done. Any other version is a
security risk and not a good idea.

You may notice that I didn't mention IMAP. IMAP is actually an online
protocol. TB's current implementation of IMAP is as a superPOP3 and as
an off-line protocol. V2 will see a move away from that, although I
don't know quite in what ways.

How IMAP's online status affects GET I really don't know. They still
don't belong together and I subscribe to Thomas F's assertion that it
is the domain of the web browser to render HTML that requires HTTP
access and not of the email client.
