If you have two accounts, then there should be a tiny black, downwards facing triangle/arrow next to the Receive New Mail button. If you click that tiny black arrow, you normally get a dropdown menu that shows all of your accounts and lets you check mail for just one of the accounts or for all of the accounts. This is the only way I know to be reading mail in one account and check the mail in another account at the same time. (Even if there is another way, this is the way that I am accustomed to.) As mentioned above, Mary, the dropdown menu should be just to the right of the Receive New Mail button and to the left of the Send Queued Mail button.
