Ah, it's my old eyes. I put my nose within two inches of my screen and
then I saw that what I thought was a "separation dot" is indeed a tiny
black arrow.

Yes. So a weird thing has now happened. I have no CC window appearing
at all. Instead, the Mail Dispatcher appears in the foreground with
its list, if there is mail on the server; if not, there's nothing, and
then I have to look at the status bar to read "no new messages."

I hate this!!

Okay, confirmed. With the additional description of my missing CC (I
have "always display" selected).
