And they disturb me, too. I don't even use them in everyday speech. My
late husband, of working-class background, would sometimes use certain
of them when he became overly exasperated. Perhaps it is, indeed, a
generational thing. Certainly it is for me.

But I do think that the forms of polite public discourse are valuable
and worth an effort to preserve. :)

So I will sometimes speak up about them if they turn up on TB! mailing
lists.
