You can enable the toolbar button that toggles on message list tabs. So bring up the menu customiser and choose the toolbar you wish to add the 'message list tabs' button. The 'message list tabs' option is in the 'mailer form' options of that huge list of options to the left. When you're finished adding the button, hit it and the tabs should appear.
