And MAU was correct!!!!! On a hunch, I removed BitDefender AV Plus 10 and reverted to ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2006 (version 6.5, with CA's AV component and then, within a day, the free upgrade to version 7, with Kaspersky AV). Now I have NO troubles with .tbb, .tbi and folder indexing, ever. Somehow, the BitDefender AV scanning behaves differently than the CA and then Kaspersky behave - and it interferes with the mail folder indexing process. Amazing. I tried to look for a setting in BitDefender AV (before giving it up) that would direct live scanning to overlook .tbb and .tbi files, but I couldn't find any such option. So I am now on ZoneAlarm (my previous choice) again and all is well with TB for me. Thank you MAU, for sharing your "intuition" about all of this - you were right on the mark.
