I have never heard of someone _really_ losing emails that way.
I may be mistaken but I think it has to do with changing versions (betas).
Alas, I am one of the few where the ctrl+alt+shift+L trick has never worked,
I suppose (but have no proof) that has to do with my particular setup (OS on
F-drive, TB! on D-drive,... (also I do not think it has anything to do with
my Azerty keyboard)).
When (not that often) I have disappearing folders, I have to add a
"new" folder, use the exact name of the disappeared folder. TB! then says it
already exists and asks if I want to use the initial folder and the problem
is solved.
So, taking the above into account, you should be glad the trick works in your
case! :-)
