As a database application programmer for 15 years I wouldn't want to
do it either. However, I work for the typical user, not me and my
preferences.

It is quite obvious your experience is with competent users who think
for themselves. In a real world environment they are a significant
minority. I work with hundreds of users who, after a decade, _still_
do not use [F1]. Apparently you view your experiences as the only
valid ones.
