Yes, I agree. But the assignment of the view modes to folders should
not necessarily be a global affair.

The "global mode" thing is very handy, it's something I miss from many 
other programs where I have make the same adjustments to every single 
folder seperately. At fifty or so folders this can take a while.

But it also leads to the problem I'm hinting at: I have defined
"global mode" to work for most of my folders. Then there are a few I
want to set to something different, so I would take them (only them,
not all) off the "global mode". I wouldn't want to do anything else,
because otherwise the normal folders loose their "manage one change
all" behaviour.

The way you have been describing it so far is either have all folders 
on global with no exceptions, or manage each folder by itself. Neither 
is the way needed. I need to set and adjust "most folders" as a unit 
(change once, see adjustment in all) and only exclude single folders 
from this management.
