No this is not how it works. What you should do is set View/Global View Mode to "No View Mode" and leave it there. Then create a folder View Mode and call it something like "Generic". Assign that view mode to all the folders you want to see that way. Then create other view modes for the other folders that you don't want to see that way, like TB lists.
