Further testing:
It's not the zoom level. It's the selected stretch filter.
The attached screen shot shows the CPU-load with different stretch 
filters used to resize a 1,35MB JPG-file to 150 %.

Baseline: Filter: Nearest
1st plateau: Filter Linear
2nd plateau: Filter Spline
3rd plateau: Filter Lanczos
4th plateau: Filter Mitchell
