A thought from nowhere about list archives. I'm not sure that anyone
knows for sure at this point, but there are some list owners on a list
for list owners that I belong to who say with a great of deal of
certainty that list archives "belong" to a list's "owners", but
individual messages in the archive "belong" to the author. What this is
supposed to mean is that a list's owners can do what they wish with the
list's archives as a whole, but that they would need the permission of
an author to do something with an individual message. So, a list's
owners have the right to publish the archives publically on the Web, but
they wouldn't have the right to cull out all Ali Martin's messages and
put them on a Web Page entitled "Ali Martin's Tips, Tricks, and
Philosophical Ruminations on The Bat!"
Some say that list owners can not legally do any editing of a list's
archives, even to the extent of removing something like unsubscribe
messages, but I figure no one's going to sue me for this. :) I assume
this is based on U.S. law and maybe Western European laws.
Anyway, the upshot is that anyone who posts messages to a mailing list
should be aware that you are giving up some right to control what may
happen with those messages and where they may end up. At least this
archive doesn't show our email address in the From field as some do.
