I guess examples will clear this up.

I dislike using Ctrl+] to go to the next message so I'll configure the
the shortcut so that the <N> is the key used when I get version 2
going.

As far as I can see there's no implemented shortcut for invoking the
message list columns configuration applet. If this is still the case
in version 2, I'll not be able to create a keyboard shortcut to do
that.

Configuring a shortcut is to assign a different key macro to it.

Creating a shortcut is creating a macro for a function yourself. That
you shouldn't be able to do AFAIK.
