GONK!!
The default value of zero is the cause of your problem. 0 means 0 days. So
all you messages were rightfully assessed as being old and purged. :)

The auto-wrap feature disrespects the formatting of text within the
boundaries of a blank line and the cursor. It tends to reformat
everything, incorporating the adjacent text. Knowing that alt+Backspace is
the keyboard shortcut for 'Undoing' comes in handy when the autoformat
gets an opportunity to misbehave; usually when I lose concentration. :-]
