Are you aware of the read and reply message filters?

I use them to do a similar thing to what you wish.

All my personal mail goes to the inbox, I then use reply and read message
filters to send them to their respective folders as I go through them. The
reply message filters are set to automatic while the read message filters
are mixed in that some are set to run automatically while others are set
to manually only. All to avoid having to open various folders to read my
messages.

Discussion list mail is high volume so they have their own holding folders
and are filtered to a pre-archive folder so to speak. When the pre-archive
folder/s is 'full', I archive some of the contents.
