I listen to your troubles with some amusement because I understand.
You forgot the part about spacebar-scrolling through messages and suddenly
deciding to go back a page to review something. You hit the PageUp button
and voila you are moved to another message a page up the message list
..... Oh cripes, "but I could've sworn that I started spacebar-scrolling
with the message view window in focus" .... ah but hell, when the space
bar takes you to the next message, the focus changes to the message list.
Grrrr.

My suggestion is to not use the message autoview window and use the
view folder window. When using the view folder window all the navigational
keys work and there is no focus to change on you without your bidding,
unless you have the 'view folders' message list on.

However, there are a couple things you should note. The first is that
each view folder window has it's own message list (View|Message list)
which works independently of the main windows list. If you wish to keep
this message list out of view, make sure that you have the sorting set to
the same as that for the corresponding folder view in the main window and
you should be OK. Anything you do in the view folder window will now be
reflected in the main windows message list.
