I would not disagree with you at all. The point I was just trying to
make was maybe the 'irritants' that obviously get under your skin so
much, serve a purpose to some degree, so remonstrating them for their
actions could be counterproductive.

Before this particular privacy issue came about, I was using a program
called UK Phone Codes. The only ad supported prog I was using. No
problem with that (as a one off - and it is so flippin' easy to
get around the banner prob as well if you are that way inclined).
However, the program did not mention anything about relaying any
other info when I installed it, so I was naturally curious to read the
hoo haa about Aureate Media's dll and the alleged privacy violation.

I was semi-aware of the issue before the posting in TBUDL, but that
posting served a purpose in prompting me to investigate further. I to
investigated this alleged violation and read for myself the reply from
Aureate. Although I don't disbelieve Aureate's statements, there is
always going to be room for categorical confirmation that their
denials are in fact truthful, and until such times many will remain
hesitant about using software that incorporates advertising using
their dlls.

As far as apps grabbing user details like your name is concerned:
Phoeey! So what! They will now have the name of my dog for what good it
will do them.

Anyhow, some of the progs works just fine offline do they not?

Slan,
