    It is not a virtual hard drive, it is a virtual machine.

    This is not needed.  Have VMware boot the raw device, not a particular
partition.  Then in Windows have to different profiles, one for VMWare, one
for native.  Once that is done you can use the same Windows installation
inside and outside of VMWare.
